Car Break-ins May Increase Insurance Rates

Springfield, MO – Recent daily crime logs and reports show car break-ins are most common in some areas of Springfield.

According to the city of Springfield, occurrences of burglaries from a motor vehicle happen in zip codes 65806 and 65807. Both not too far from Missouri State’s campus.

In fact, a Missouri State student recently experienced a similar situation in one of these areas where the wheel of her ca was stolen.

“So I get to my car, put my bags in the car, turn the car on, put it in reverse and I hear something scraping, “said Emagé Grant, a junior at Missouri State University.

Grant’s wheel was stolen on the Cherry Plaza’s parking lot across the street from the campus.

If you move into a zip code that has high crime rates of break-ins, your insurance rates may increase.

“Allstate has zip code zones based on loss ratios,” explained David Torgeson, an Allstate insurance agent. “A loss ratio is how many claims we have had in that zip code and so certain zip codes in Springfield have lower prices than other zip codes based on losses.”

Research says leaving valuable items in visible sight, like auxiliary cords and car chargers, may increase the risk of auto theft.
